On January 23, 2010, the SEHDP sponsored a one-day hammered dulcimer workshop and evening concert with

KEN KOLODNER

at the Avondale Estates First Baptist Church (in the Atlanta area)

The SEHDP was very fortunate to get on the schedule of one of the most popular and talented dulcimer players and instructors in the country. See kenkolodner.com

The workshop was attended by 17 hammered dulcimer players of all playing levels – from players new to the instrument to those who have been playing for years. During the day, Ken taught two songs, his arrangement of Mozart’s canzonetta from Don Giovanni and his arrangement of Stephen Foster’s Hard Times. He also included tips on arranging, chord theory, and accompaniment techniques.

For lunch, the workshop participants and their guests enjoyed sandwiches and salads at the home of Linda and Don Coatsworth, who live in Avondale Estates. Having lunch together in an informal setting gave everyone a chance to get to know each other better and provided a wonderful break in the day.

Saturday night, Ken gave an enthusiastic performance in the church sanctuary for the general public. He performed on the hammered dulcimer, the fiddle, and on a new instrument, the mbira. His friend, Dave Marcus, leader of the Chattahoochee Country Dancers, accompanied him on the concertina and the hammered dulcimer. Despite rain, there was a good turnout for the concert.
